Schreiner Equestrian

WHAT IS EQUESTRIAN AT SCHREINER?

Schreiner University Equestrian Team is a varsity club sport with the goal of allowing students of all skill- levels to better their equitation and horsemanship. We welcome riders of all levels of abilities, whether you’ve never been on a horse in your life or you’re a lifelong equestrian.

Our mission is to be a competitive team on a National level, while at the same time developing a strong sense of camaraderie between team members. The program assists students not only in developing riding skills, but also in developing the sportsmanship, leadership, and organizational skills necessary to be successful professionals.

WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE?

Lessons, practices, meetings and shows are held throughout Fall and Spring Semesters. Additional lessons may be continued through winter, spring and summer breaks. Riders should plan to spend at least 4-8 hours each week participating in riding lessons. Most of our competitions require some length of travel.

Our team will compete through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). The team will ride English and Western and compete in hunt seat equitation style, both on the flat and over fences.

Each year the team will compete at different horse shows within our region in which both team and the individual can gain points towards competing at Regionals or Zone finals. Riders will participate in a random draw from a pool of skill-matched horses.

  • IHSA was founded on the principle that regardless of an individuals’ financial status or riding level, any college student should be able to participate in horse shows.
  • The focus is on sportsmanship, learning, friendship and fun.
  • IHSA aims to offer all levels of riders the opportunity for a fun and competitive experience.

WHO CAN BE INVOLVED?

Any full-time student at Schreiner University who is passionate and motivated to improve their riding skills is welcome to join. Riders do not need to own their own horse! Experience levels range from those who have never had a chance to take up riding but have had a love for both equines and competition, to those who have successfully competed in higher level equitation and jumpers.

Even though we will ride English and Western and compete in competitive hunt seat equitation style, ALL disciplines are welcome and highly encouraged to join. Riding on a team provides a great social setting as our season will span the entire school year, rather than just one semester. The team will also have many other social events planned throughout the year, further ensuring the growth of deep friendships and team competition.
