Schreiner University to Host Jane Ragsdale Memorial Polo Celebration Along the Guadalupe River

Kerrville, TEXAS – On Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Schreiner University will host the Jane Ragsdale Memorial Polo Celebration at Camp Stewart for Boys (612 FM-1340, Hunt, TX 78024). Set along the banks of the Guadalupe River, the event will benefit the Schreiner University Equestrian Team while honoring the life and legacy of beloved Hill Country leader Jane Ragsdale.

The celebration will feature a spirited polo match, a festive Fancy Hat Contest, and VIP hospitality experiences designed to bring together alumni, donors, families, and friends of the Texas Hill Country for a meaningful afternoon of remembrance, renewal, and community.

Returning to the River

In a message to the Schreiner community, President Dr. Charlie McCormick reflected on the deeper significance of gathering along the Guadalupe:

“The Guadalupe River has long been the defining feature of the Hill Country. We have fished in it, swam in it, and built lifelong memories along its banks. Having now experienced its fury, many of us have been unable to return for enjoyment.

On April 18, Schreiner University invites you to join us on the river for a fun-filled, exciting polo match in support of our equestrian team. Our relationship with the river has changed forever—but it invites us to return with appreciation, vigilance, and hope.”

The event serves as both a celebration of tradition and a moment to honor the resilience of the Hill Country community.

Honoring Jane Ragsdale

The 2025 summer flood deeply affected families across Texas and beyond. Among those lost was Jane Ragsdale, whose lifelong stewardship of Heart O’ the Hills and dedication to generations of campers and families left an enduring mark on the region.

In her honor, Schreiner University will establish the Jane Ragsdale Perpetual Cup, awarded annually to the winning polo team. The Cup will stand as a lasting tribute to her leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment to youth development and the Hill Country way of life.

Supporting the Schreiner Equestrian Team

Schreiner University launched its Equestrian Team in partnership with Camp Stewart eight years ago. Under the leadership of Coach Ashley Brune (’15), a Schreiner graduate and accomplished competitor, the program has steadily grown in competitiveness and visibility.

The team works closely with Jeeper Ragsdale, internationally recognized coach of the USA Modern Pentathlon’s Equestrian Program, having guided athletes through three World Championships and two Olympic Games. Today, Schreiner riders compete through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), advancing to regional and postseason championship competitions.

Schreiner University and Camp Stewart share a legacy dating back to the early 1920s. Both institutions were founded during the same era and have maintained a longstanding relationship rooted in leadership development, outdoor tradition, and service to the Hill Country. The late Si Ragsdale served on a Schreiner advisory board, and Jane Ragsdale devoted nearly two decades of service as a trustee—an enduring reflection of the partnership between the two institutions.

Proceeds from the Jane Ragsdale Memorial Polo Celebration will:

• Enhance riding facilities and grounds at Camp Stewart
• Strengthen and endow the Schreiner University Equestrian Team
• Expand access to collegiate riding and polo opportunities

This initiative reflects Schreiner University’s commitment to transformative student experiences and its identity as the Hill Country’s university.
