Schreiner University Takes Flag Football Recruiting International with Mexico City Showcase

Schreiner University expanded its international recruiting efforts this month as representatives traveled to Mexico City to participate in the New Players Show Case Mexico, connecting the University with talented female flag football athletes from Mexico and Latin America.

Schreiner was represented at the September 11-13 event by Coach McCoy, Schreiner University’s Flag Football Coach, and Alan Liebrecht, Vice President for Enrollment Management.

The three-day showcase was designed to connect emerging Latin American flag football talent with collegiate opportunities in the United States. The event brought together U.S. colleges and universities and a selected group of female athletes for university presentations, position-specific drills, combine testing and live competition.

For Schreiner, the trip provided both an athletic recruiting opportunity and a chance to introduce prospective international students and their families to the University, its academic programs and the experience of attending college in the Texas Hill Country.

“There is tremendous talent in Mexico, and this showcase gave us an opportunity to build relationships with young women who are excited about continuing both their education and their flag football careers,” said Coach McCoy. “As we build Schreiner Flag Football, we want to look beyond the traditional recruiting footprint and find student-athletes who can help shape the culture and future of our program. Being in Mexico City and meeting these athletes face-to-face was an important step for us.”

Participating universities received dedicated presentation time before the athletes, giving Schreiner an opportunity to share information about the University directly with prospective student-athletes. The weekend then moved to the field at Estadio Jesús “Palillo” Martínez, where athletes participated in position-specific flag football drills, standardized combine testing and competitive game situations.

Interest in the showcase was substantial. Pre-registration generated 313 athlete leads from Mexico and neighboring markets, with the event focused primarily on female athletes ages 16 to 20. The registration pool included athletes from Mexico City, Estado de México and communities throughout Mexico, as well as participants from Colombia and Venezuela.

Schreiner’s participation comes as opportunities in women’s flag football continue to grow and the University works to establish relationships with prospective student-athletes in new recruiting markets.

Having both athletics and enrollment leadership represented in Mexico City allowed Schreiner to approach the showcase from a broader perspective, connecting conversations about competition and recruiting with information about academics, admissions and the overall Schreiner experience.

The New Players Show Case Mexico was organized by New Players Sports, a sports management and talent development organization focused on building international pathways between athletes and educational and athletic opportunities in the United States.
