THE OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

EMPOWERING EVERY MOUNTAINEER TO THRIVE THROUGH
LEARNING, LEADERSHIP, OPPORTUNITY, AND PURPOSE

Barbara

Dr. Barbara Oh
Dean of Academic Excellence, Assistant Professor of Sociology

The Office of the Dean of Academic Excellence fosters an educational experience in which every student has the opportunity to grow intellectually, engage deeply with their community, and prepare for a meaningful future. We believe learning is most powerful when it extends beyond the classroom—when students are challenged to think critically, reflect intentionally, apply their knowledge in authentic contexts, and connect their education to the lives they hope to lead. Through collaboration across the university, we strive to create an integrated experience that supports students as learners, leaders, professionals, and engaged citizens.

As Dean, I am committed to cultivating a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning for our campus and community. Academic Excellence is not the work of a single office or initiative, but a shared commitment to creating environments where students can flourish academically, personally, and professionally. I believe our collective strength lies not in any single office or initiative, but in the relationships we build, the questions we ask, and our shared
commitment to creating meaningful educational experiences. It is a privilege to serve alongside faculty, colleagues, and students who make that work possible every day. Learn more about our team here!

The Office of Academic Success stimulates student success through a variety of student-staffed programs and services including the Writing Center, Peer Tutoring Center and Supplemental Instruction. All services provide academic support to students and promote lifelong learning
practices. Student employees regularly engage in professional development training designed to help them excel in guiding their peers toward academic success. They work closely with faculty and staff to ensure the support they are providing is of highest quality.

Schreiner University’s Office of Career Services empowers students to discover their strengths, explore career pathways, and connect their education to meaningful opportunities beyond the classroom. Through individualized career guidance, professional development, internships, student employment, networking, and employer engagement, students gain valuable skills, confidence, and real-world experiences that prepare them for life after graduation.

Career Services supports students throughout their college journey, helping them explore their interests, identify opportunities for growth, and translate their academic and personal experiences into professional strengths. By connecting classroom learning with career exploration and hands-on experiences, students develop a greater understanding of their unique talents, interests, and the value they bring to the world.

Our goal is to help students discover not only what they want to do, but who they want to become, empowering them to pursue meaningful careers, embrace new opportunities, and lead lives of purpose and impact

Learning Support Services at Schreiner University serves a limited number of students, usually 60-70 each year, who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, or a specific learning disability in reading, mathematics or written expression. Students in the program attend regular college-level courses, are held to the same high standards, and complete the same curriculum requirements as all other degree candidates. In addition to the LSS staff, the Schreiner University faculty is dedicated to helping students realize their full potential. Students admitted to the Learning Support Services program must be highly motivated, have the intellectual potential for success in a rigorous academic program, and have the ability to meet the demands of college life.
