Schreiner University Names Dr. Susan Klinedinst as Mayfield Endowed Chair in Science and Undergraduate Research

KERRVILLE, Texas – Schreiner University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Susan Klinedinst as the Dr. Demmie G. Mayfield Endowed Chair in Science and Undergraduate Research. This distinguished role is key to advancing high-impact, student-centered learning experiences in alignment with the Schreiner 2030 Strategic Plan.
Dr. Klinedinst, an accomplished molecular and developmental biologist and Associate Professor of Biology, has dedicated the past twelve years to elevating undergraduate research at Schreiner. Her work extends beyond the laboratory, advocating for student research and mentorship across Texas and the nation. She has guided more than 50 undergraduate researchers on projects that led to professional conference presentations and successful entry into graduate and professional schools.
“As Mayfield Chair, I am dedicated to ensuring that every Schreiner student, regardless of background or major, can experience the transformational power of original research and creative discovery,” Dr. Klinedinst said. “Undergraduate research not only enriches classroom learning, but also inspires confidence, cultivates curiosity, and prepares students to excel as scholars and citizens.”
Dr. Klinedinst has already made a significant impact at Schreiner, launching initiatives such as the A-STEM Summer Research Internship and serving as the STEM Undergraduate Research Coordinator. Building on these successes, she will focus on expanding access to research and creative opportunities, training faculty mentors, and embedding research-rich experiences directly into academic programs university-wide.
“We are so excited for Dr. Klinedinst to serve as the Mayfield Chair in Science and Undergraduate Research,” said Dr. Russell J. Frohardt, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “She brings a wealth of experience as an educator, scientist, and advocate for students engaged in research opportunities—not only here at Schreiner, but also through organizations such as the Texas Academy of Science and the Council of Undergraduate Research. Susan’s innovative ideas, like embedding research experiences into the existing curriculum and developing micro-credential pathways, are already generating enthusiasm among Schreiner faculty, staff, and students.”
Dr. Klinedinst’s appointment also supports Schreiner’s participation in national efforts such as the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), helping the university reach its goal that 75% of seniors engage in two or more High Impact Practices before graduation.
