Peace, Love, and Compassion: A Christmas Reflection
Dear Schreiner Family,
The message of Christmas reminds us of the enduring call to understanding, mutual respect, and reconciliation. Peace, love, and compassion invite us to live in harmony and reflect God’s love for the world that sustains all creation. These timeless values challenge us to live with hope and foster connections that heal the divisions around us, even as we navigate a world shadowed by conflict and uncertainty.
In her Nobel Prize acceptance speech, author Han Kang posed two profound questions: ‘Why is the world so violent and painful? And yet, how can the world be so beautiful?’ Reflecting on these questions, Han Kang invites us to wrestle with this tension, ultimately discovering that at the deepest level of all her inquiries lies love. She described this love as the “golden thread” connecting our hearts. It is an enduring presence that underscores both our joys and struggles. For her, this thread has become a source of both tension and hope. It illuminates our interconnectedness and inspires us to reach toward one another with care and compassion.
This golden thread is not merely a poetic metaphor but a powerful reminder of our shared humanity. It signifies that we are interdependent beings, woven together into a shared fabric of existence. Her discovery of love as the golden thread connecting us resonates deeply with the message of Christmas. It is a call to bridge divides and transform pain into hope through understanding and compassion. As such, we are called not only to recognize this bond but to act upon it, working collectively to heal the brokenness of our world and move toward a more just and compassionate future.
Wherever you may be this holiday season, I pray that peace and love fill your hearts and homes. As a community dedicated to fostering growth, understanding, and meaningful connections, Schreiner reminds us that our shared efforts to support and uplift one another make a lasting impact. Together, let us continue to build a community where love, understanding, and responsibility flourish. May this season inspire us to embrace the beauty of diversity, the joy of learning, and the responsibility to care for one another. Wishing you peace, hope, and love in this special season, and a joyful and blessed New Year.
Grace and peace, Rev. Dongwoo Lee, PhD University Minister
