Summerlin Visiting Artist Series features a presentation on flamenco history and a live dance performance

KERRVILLE, Texas — Schreiner University will welcome flamenco dancer, choreographer and educator Sonya Casillas for two events Nov. 3–4, 2026, as part of the Summerlin Visiting Artist Series.

Casillas will present “The History and Pageantry of Flamenco” on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 5:30 p.m. A live flamenco dance performance will follow on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m., with a reception at 7 p.m. Both events will take place in the Cailloux Campus Activity Center ballrooms on Schreiner’s campus, 2100 Memorial Blvd. in Kerrville.

Currently the Flamenco Dance Director for the San Antonio Parks & Recreation Cultural Division, Casillas brings decades of experience in Spanish folkloric dance, Spanish classical dance and flamenco. Her career has taken her across the United States and to Spain for study and performance.

Casillas began dancing at age six with La Compañía de Baile. She later founded Mexico–España Dance Company and toured with the Boston Flamenco Ballet Company, where she also served as choreographer. Her professional experience includes performances with the José Greco II Dance Company and the Antonio Granjero Dance Company, as well as appearances at the Festival Flamenco Internacional de Albuquerque.

She is also the founder, artistic director and choreographer of La Sonya y Gitanas, an ensemble dedicated to presenting flamenco throughout the region. Through performance and education, Casillas works to preserve and advance the art form for diverse audiences.

The two-day program will offer an opportunity to explore flamenco’s history and traditions before experiencing its artistry in a live performance.

The Summerlin Visiting Artist Series is funded by the Summerlin Visiting Artist Chair, which honors former Schreiner University President Dr. Tim Summerlin and the memory of his nephews, Reuben and Daniel Summerlin.
