“How to Look. What to See.” is topic of Schreiner University Labatt Lecture on Feb 26

Art historian Dr. Annie Labatt will be the next presenter in Schreiner University’s Weir and Nell Labatt Distinguished Lecture Series on February 26 at 4:00 PM in the Junkin Campus Ministry Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Labatt is a renowned art historian and the author of Art History 101… Without the Exams (Trinity University Press, 2022).

“Dr. Labatt’s engaging and accessible approach to art history makes her lecture relevant not only to art and humanities courses but also to a broader audience interested in the intersections of culture, history, and creative expression,” said Dr. William Woods, Dean of Academic Support. “This event promises to enrich our academic community, provide valuable insights for our students, and be of interest to the general public.”

Her topic is “How to Look. What to See.”

Labatt earned her doctorate from Yale University, holds three master’s degrees, and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College of Columbia University. She previously served as an Associate Professor of Visual Studies and the Director of Galleries and Museums at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She has also taught in the Art and Art History Department at the University of Texas at San Antonio and at Fordham University in New York City.

Her most recent publication, Art History 101… Without the Exams: Looking Closely at Objects from the History of Art (Trinity University Press, 2022), explores how to engage with art beyond traditional academic settings. She is also the author of Byzantine Rome (Arc Humanities Press, 2022) and Emerging Iconographies of Medieval Rome: A Laboratory of Images in the Eighth and Ninth Centuries (Lexington Books, 2019).

The Weir and Nell Labatt Distinguished Lecture Series was established through a generous gift from the late Nell Schreiner Labatt, with the mission of bringing motivational speakers to the Schreiner University campus.
