Pre-Occupation Therapy

Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) or Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) Admissions Pathway

Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession focused on helping individuals achieve independence and improve their ability to perform daily activities despite physical, mental, or developmental challenges. Occupational therapists (OTs) work with people of all ages to develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed for self-care, work, and leisure activities. OTs create personalized intervention plans that may include therapeutic exercises, adaptive techniques, and the use of assistive devices.

Schreiner University does not offer MOT or OTD degrees. However, students can complete their prerequisite coursework for Occupational Therapy (OT) school through the completion of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Health Sciences (Pre-Occupational Therapy Track) from Schreiner University. Other degrees are possible as long as the OT school prerequisites are met. Students are encouraged to research the specific requirements of OT schools of interest by visiting their websites for information on admission requirements.

Pre-Occupational Therapy students should maintain a comprehensive log of their healthcare experiences and volunteering opportunities throughout their undergraduate studies. This documentation will be invaluable when applying to OT school, as it showcases commitment to the field, hands-on experience, and dedication to serving others.

Pre-OT students traditionally take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) in the spring or summer of their junior year prior to applying to OT schools. However, the GRE is not often required by most OT programs.

Applications for OT school are usually submitted in the summer between junior and senior year, around June, through the Occupational Therapist Centralized Application Service (OTCAS). OT schools may require supplemental applications for their specific program.

Application Success Tools

The Health Professions program offers pre-OT students a unique opportunity to participate in mock interviews designed to prepare them for OT school applications. Through this initiative, students engage in simulated interviews conducted by experienced faculty and/or professionals in the OT field. The program provides personalized feedback, helping students refine their communication skills, articulate their motivations, and effectively present their qualifications. This hands-on experience aims to boost students’ confidence and readiness, ensuring they are well-prepared for the competitive OT school interview process. Contact the program coordinator about scheduling a mock interview.
