Schreiner University’s Theatre Department Celebrates its Tenth Season with Riders to the Sea

Kerrville, TX – Riders to the Sea is the final show of The Flag Is Up’s tenth anniversary season. This brief Irish drama is a one-act play written by celebrated playwright John Millington Synge. The Schreiner University production opens Friday, Apr 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hanszen Fine Arts Building’s Studio Theatre. It continues Saturday, Apr 29, at 7:30 p.m. and closes with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Apr 30.

The show concludes the “wildly successful” first full theatre season since the COVID shutdown. This drama is particularly important because it was produced entirely by Schreiner University students.

Senior Dakota Edwards directs the show under the supervision of Theatre Director, Jeff Cunningham.

Schreiner University freshman Scooty Garrett has designed original scenery. The theatre practicum lab is already hard at work building the set. They have already laid down a hard-board floor over Hanszen’s concrete stage so they can paint Scooty’s decorative floor as part of the show.

Schreiner University freshman Lynx Brittain is working with Scooty to design lights that complement the set and help create the mood and style of the show.

The cast includes Gracie Barnes, Mak Morton, Hailey Grassie, and Jill Barcomb with an ensemble including Morgan Cagle, Allison Hockaday, Heather Allen, and Channing Bloom.

Riders to the Sea was written by Synge to expose the world to the strange and rich culture and language of the people of West Ireland’s Aran Islands. The story follows an aging woman and her daughters as they ponder the men who they have lost to the rough seas.

Admission is free. Seats are currently first come, first serve. Contact JBCunningham@schreiner.edu with any questions regarding the show. Performances are Friday and Saturday, Apr 28- 29, at 7:30 p.m. with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 30.
