Schreiner University Names Dr. Ben Montoya as 2025 Nancy and Cecil Atkission Professorship

Kerrville, TX – Schreiner University is pleased to announce that Dr. Ben Montoya, Associate Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History and Regional Studies, has been named the recipient of the Nancy and Cecil Atkission Professorship beginning in Fall 2025.

This professorship was established to enhance Schreiner’s academic programs by supporting faculty whose scholarship and teaching contribute meaningfully to the university’s mission. Dr. Montoya’s proposed project will support the development of his next book, which focuses on political leaders from the American South and their influence on United States immigration policy in the decades following World War II.

Dr. Montoya is the founder of Schreiner’s Mexican American Studies program. His research and teaching advance the university’s commitment to diversity, student engagement, and academic rigor. According to the Office of the Provost, his work aligns with the intent of the Atkission Professorship to support effective undergraduate teaching and to strengthen the academic community at Schreiner.

During the term of the professorship, Dr. Montoya will conduct archival research at the James O. Eastland Collection at the University of Mississippi. He also plans to involve undergraduate students in the project through research assistance, offering them hands-on academic experience.

The Nancy and Cecil Atkission Professorship includes an annual salary stipend and a professional development fund to support continued scholarship. It also allows for a course reduction to enable deeper engagement with research and program development, subject to approval.
