Schreiner University Freshmen Complete Mental Health Awareness Training in Partnership with AFSP

Schreiner University is proud to announce a major milestone in student wellness and community education. This month, the entire freshman class — 449 students — completed a mental health awareness program titled “It’s Real: College Students and Mental Health,” developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Over the course of four days, students attended in-person training facilitated by Dr. Tiffany Culver, an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director for the Division of Human Performance and Behavior, along with a team of Psychology Student Coordinators and Learning Support Tutors. The presentation used AFSP’s nationally acclaimed 17-minute film featuring real student experiences, designed to raise awareness of mental health conditions, encourage help-seeking, and promote resilience in college environments.

“Mental health concerns are very real for college students, and we want them to know they are not alone,” said Dr. Culver. “We are building a campus culture that recognizes the importance of early intervention and compassion.”

This campus-wide effort reinforces Schreiner’s longstanding commitment to holistic education and supporting students in every aspect of their personal and academic journey.

As part of Schreiner’s partnership with the Kerrville Chapter of the AFSP, the university also offers free mental health presentations and suicide prevention education to local schools, organizations, and community groups. These programs are available at no cost and can be tailored for middle schools, high schools, educators, healthcare professionals, and communities including Black and African American, Hispanic, and LGBTQ+ populations.
