Schreiner University – in a lifelong learning partnership with Dynamic Learning Institute (DLI) – will host “Star of Bethlehem” astronomical class at 6 p.m. Tuesday Nov 6 in the River Room of the Floyd and Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center. A star party immediately following at the Loftis Family Science Center.
To register for DLI classes, call 830-792-4044 Monday through Friday, or register online at http://www.clubed.net. Class registration fees are $20.
The “Star of Bethlehem” story reminds us of a time when looking up to the skies with awe and wonder were part of everyday life. As we approach the Christmas season, DLI wants to rekindle our ancient fascination with the night skies by learning about the everlasting light of the Christmas Star.
Astronomy Professor Kim Arvidsson is Director of The Schreiner University Loftis Observatory. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago after receiving his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Iowa State University. Over the years, Arvidsson has regularly received questions about the Star of Bethlehem and he ultimately decided to delve into the topic to answer the common questions people express.
Immediately following Arvidsson’s presentation, participants will be able to view celestial objects in the Hill Country sky in the domed observatory containing Schreiner’s 16-inch telescope. Several eight-inch telescopes will also be available.
The event will be cancelled if the sky is overcast.
Dynamic Learning Institute (DLI), in a lifelong learning partnership between Schreiner University, Club Ed and SERV Kerrville, aims to provide the Kerrville community with interesting, educational and stimulating lifelong learning experiences.
The Schreiner University Loftis Family Science Center was made possible by a gift from the late Dennis Loftis, an amateur—but accomplished—astronomer. In addition to the observatory and telescope, the 3,500-square-foot facility includes a field biology lab and classroom.
