Position Title: Peer Tutor – Dickey Hall / STEM Zone Lab
Department: Academic Excellence
Reports To: Director of Student Success

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Peer Tutor provides individualized and group academic support while helping students develop effective study strategies, time management skills, and habits necessary for success. In addition to content support, they serve as approachable, trusted peers who help students navigate academic challenges and build confidence.

The Peer Tutor serves as a key contributor in driving a culture of academic success, belonging, and student support within Dickey Hall and the STEM Zone Lab. This role extends beyond traditional tutoring by integrating academic coaching, relationship-building, and program support to enhance the overall student experience.

Peer Tutors may elect to be Academic Success Leaders as well as content tutors, serving as culture-builders, helping create an environment where all students feel welcomed, supported, and comfortable seeking help. This role plays an active part in transforming the student experience from transactional tutoring interactions to meaningful, student-centered engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring across assigned subject areas
  • Drive a positive, encouraging learning environment that builds student confidence
  • Utilize effective teaching strategies tailored to diverse learning styles
  • Assist students with time management, study skills, and academic planning
  • Support and help facilitate academic success programs (e.g., Writing Center, Supplemental Instruction, Study Buddy Program)
  • Collaborate with staff to develop and implement student success initiatives
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and student engagement
  • Promote academic resources and services available through Dickey Hall and the STEM Zone Lab
  • Serve as a role model for academic excellence, professionalism, and leadership

  • You communicate clearly and effectively with students, peers, and supervisors
  • You maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards in all interactions

  • You contribute ideas and energy toward strengthening programs and enhancing the overall student experience

  • You actively promote and connect students to available academic resources when additional support is needed

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily conducted in an academic support environment within Dickey Hall and/or STEM Zone Lab, including both in-person and virtual settings. Occasional participation in outreach efforts, events, or tabling may be required to promote student engagement and awareness of available resources.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student at Schreiner University
  • Strong academic performance in relevant subject areas
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to explain concepts clearly in both individual and group settings
  • Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and dependability
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to build rapport and create a supportive, engaging learning environment
  • Interest in helping others succeed and contributing to a positive student experience
  • Experience with tutoring, mentoring, or academic support (preferred but not required)
  • Familiarity with Google Suite / Microsoft Office and willingness to learn new systems
