Sophomore Ashley Lane qualifies for Regionals
Kerrville, TX – Schreiner University’s Equestrian Team was thrilled to have their first team member qualify for Regionals last weekend at the Texas Tech IHSA Western Show. This accomplishment is credited to sophomore Ashley Lane who won 1st in her class, earning her enough points to guarantee her a spot in this year’s Regional Finals. Lane started her riding career as a freshman last year, competing in the Beginner level.
The 2020 Western Regional Finals will be hosted this year by West Texas A&M University on Mar 1. The top two riders from Regionals will advance to Semi-Finals on Mar 21-22, hosted by Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, OK, and sponsored by the National Reining Horse Association.
Schreiner University’s Equestrian Team is in its second year with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). The team is led by Head Coach and English Instructor Ashley Brune, and Western Coach Shannon Strauss. Students can choose to ride in Western style, English style, or both, and they compete against other riders in their skill level ranging from Walk-Trot to the Open Division.
Students do not need to own their own horse; as horses are furnished by the hosting colleges, and students draw the horse they will be competing on for the class. Riders are judged on their ability to ride the horse they have drawn. English competitions consist of flat classes and jumping courses, while Western competitions include Horsemanship and Reining patterns. The Schreiner University Equestrian Team trains at Camp Stewart in Hunt to practice riding different types of horses, and to prepare them for the competitions.
