Pre-Physical Therapy

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Admissions Pathway

Physical therapy, or physiotherapy, is a healthcare profession focused on evaluating, diagnosing, and treating physical impairments, disabilities, and pain. It uses exercises, manual therapy, education, and modalities like heat, cold, and electrical stimulation. The goal is to enhance mobility, functional ability, and quality of life for individuals with conditions that limit their ability to move and perform daily activities. Physical therapists work in hospitals, clinics, rehab centers, schools, sports facilities, and private practices.

Schreiner University does not offer a DPT degree. However, students can complete their prerequisite coursework for Physical Therapy (PT) school through the completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science (Pre-Professional Track) from Schreiner University. Other degrees are possible as long as the PT school prerequisites are met. Pre-PT students should maintain a comprehensive log of their healthcare experiences and volunteering opportunities throughout their undergraduate studies. This documentation will be invaluable when applying to PT school, as it showcases commitment to the field, hands-on experience, and dedication to serving others.

Pre-PT students traditionally take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) in the spring or summer of their junior year. Students should time their GRE carefully, ensuring they have completed key coursework and prepared thoroughly. Taking the GRE too early can result in poor scores due to inadequate preparation, while taking it too late may delay applications, reducing admission chances.

Applications for PT school are usually submitted in the summer between junior and senior year, around June, through the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS). PT schools may require supplemental applications for their specific program.

By completing these certifications, students enhance their professional qualifications and gain a competitive advantage as they prepare for their future careers in health professions.

The Health Professions program offers pre-PT students a unique opportunity to participate in mock interviews designed to prepare them for PT school applications. Through this initiative, students engage in simulated interviews conducted by experienced faculty and/or professionals in the PT field. The program provides personalized feedback, helping students refine their communication skills, articulate their motivations, and effectively present their qualifications. This hands-on experience aims to boost students’ confidence and readiness, ensuring they are well-prepared for the competitive PT school interview process. Contact the program coordinator about scheduling a mock interview.
