Medical Doctors, also known as Physicians, are responsible for the care of both healthy individuals and those who are sick or injured. They conduct physical examinations, diagnose and treat various conditions, including illnesses and injuries, and may perform surgeries. Additionally, they are authorized to prescribe and administer medications and treatments. In addition to M.D.s, healthcare includes professionals like Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.s) and Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.s), who bring specialized expertise in holistic care and foot and ankle health, respectively.

Other degrees are possible as long as the medical school prerequisites are met. Students are encouraged to research the specific requirements of medical schools of interest by visiting their websites for information on admission requirements.

Pre-medical students should maintain a comprehensive log of their healthcare experiences and volunteering opportunities throughout their undergraduate studies. This documentation will be invaluable when applying to medical school, as it showcases commitment to the field, hands-on experience, and dedication to serving others.

Pre-medical students traditionally take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in the spring or summer of their junior year. Students should time their MCAT exam carefully, ensuring they have completed key coursework and prepared thoroughly. Taking the MCAT too early can result in poor scores due to inadequate preparation, while taking it too late may delay applications, reducing admission chances.

Applications for medical school are usually submitted in the summer between junior and senior year, around June, through the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS), the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), and/or the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS). Medical schools may require supplemental applications for their specific program.

JAMP is an undergraduate pipeline program designed to support highly motivated and economically disadvantaged students from Texas in pursuing medical careers. JAMP offers a range of benefits, including guaranteed admission to a Texas medical school for those who meet all program requirements, financial support for undergraduate studies, summer internships, and comprehensive MCAT preparation. By partnering with JAMP, Schreiner University provides students with a unique pathway to achieve their medical career aspirations, helping to diversify the healthcare workforce in Texas.

Our university offers simulated MCAT administrations designed to prepare students for the actual exam experience. This service replicates the testing environment, timing, and question format of the MCAT, allowing students to practice under realistic conditions. Participants receive detailed feedback on their performance, helping them identify strengths and areas for improvement, ultimately boosting their confidence and readiness for the official exam.

The Health Professions program offers pre-medical students a unique opportunity to participate in mock interviews designed to prepare them for medical school applications. Through this initiative, students engage in simulated interviews conducted by experienced faculty and./or professionals in the medical field. The program provides personalized feedback, helping students refine their communication skills, articulate their motivations, and effectively present their qualifications. This hands-on experience aims to boost students’ confidence and readiness, ensuring they are well-prepared for the competitive medical school interview process. Contact the program coordinator about scheduling a mock interview.
