Pre-Athletic Training
Master of Athletic Training (MAT) Admissions Pathway
Athletic trainers, also known as ATs, specialize in the management, prevention, and recovery of injured athletes. Many times, athletic trainers are the first medical professionals on the scene after an injury. Athletic trainers collaborate with doctors to provide emergency and follow-up care and develop injury prevention and treatment programs for injured athletes. Athletic trainers also provide a vital communication link between the injured athlete, the physician, the coach, and sometimes the athlete’s family to determine when it’s right to return to practice and competition.
Journey to Athletic Training

Schreiner University does not offer a MAT degree. However, students can complete their prerequisite coursework for Athletic Training (AT) school through the completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science (Pre-Professional Track) from Schreiner University. Other degrees are possible as long as the AT school prerequisites are met. Students are encouraged to research the specific requirements of AT schools of interest by visiting their websites for information on admission requirements.

Pre-AT students should maintain a comprehensive log of their healthcare experiences and volunteering opportunities throughout their undergraduate studies. This documentation will be invaluable when applying to AT school, as it showcases commitment to the field, hands-on experience, and dedication to serving others.
Most AT schools do not require an entrance exam for acceptance into their program. However, students are advised to verify application requirements for the program of interest prior to the start of the application process.Â
Applications for AT school are usually submitted in the summer between junior and senior year, around June, through the Athletic Training Centralized Application System (ATCAS). AT schools may require supplemental applications for their specific program.
