Happy to Be Back at Schreiner!

In the fall of 1987, it seems no matter when my parents called the AC Schreiner landline, nobody was there to answer. I mean, why would we girls be in our dorms when there were so many cute boys just a short walk across campus?! Maybe we were out two-stepping at Long Branch in our colorful Justin Ropers and high-waisted Rocky Mountain jeans! Or maybe we donned our oversized hoodies and ballcaps to go watch the fire burn down at Flat Rock Dam! Our plan was to have fun now, and catch-up on studies, sleep, and nosy parents on Sunday!

I bet I am not the only one grateful to have attended Schreiner before the invention of camera phones, social media, and the Life360 app. At barely 18-years-old, my prefrontal cortex was not yet making her best decisions. I am grateful that Luke 2:52, the “foursquare” verse, was regularly prayed over us by then-President Sam Junkin, who continued the prayer practice modelled by first President Jim Delaney. There were some hard lessons, but eventually we grew in stature and wisdom, and in favor with God and man.

Fast forward to January 1992. With my heart and brain full, Registrar Darlene Bannister confirmed the completion of my degree. I found work and moved back to San Antonio but also started volunteering at my beloved Schreiner. A few years later, I finally snagged one of those cute Schreiner boys. Kyle Nye ’94 and I met while serving on the SFSA Board. Curiously, we never knew each other in college, even though we had many of the same friends. Kyle and I married in 2002, had two sons, and continued to have as much involvement with Schreiner as our busy lives would allow.

Fast forward again to May 2025. Knowing Kyle and I would soon be “empty nesters,” I spotted a job opening in Alumni Relations and Development at Schreiner. My friend and predecessor Tammi Bingham was leaving to join her husband in New Mexico. I delighted in the well-timed opportunity, and have now been on the job for just over two (unprecedented!) months. It is an honor to serve the Schreiner alumni and former students of all eras! I cannot wait to meet you and hear your Schreiner story!

For anyone who made it this far, email me at mmnye@schreiner.edu with your current information (phone, address, and anything else you want me to know) and I will send you a surprise in the mail.

Sincerely,
Lea Nye ’92
Assistant Director of Development: Alumni Relations
