Purpose

A graduate assistantship serves two purposes:

To provide graduate students with part-time, paid work experience in their field of study, and allow them to expand and/or apply their discipline knowledge and skills under supervision.

To provide Schreiner University faculty and/or staff assistance in carrying out special projects or other assignments that require the advanced discipline skills of graduate students. Learn More

Available Assistantships

Schreiner University’s Athletic department offers several graduate assistantships for graduate students in the MBA or MED programs. Any graduate student interested in an assistantship should reach out to the University’s Athletic Director, Bill Raleigh, WRaleigh@schreiner.edu

Definition

The activities assigned to graduate assistants are intended to have educational value for the student and to enhance the student’s academic experience. Although some tasks may include a clerical component, a graduate assistantship is not meant to be used to provide primarily clerical and office support to departments.

Graduate assistants are employed by an academic department or university office and may include research, technical assistance, and institutional support. They may assist their departments, students, or faculty in research or administrative capacity. Their primary responsibilities include assisting faculty with various administrative tasks, organizing campus events, and conducting various research tasks. They also help researchers by conducting interviews, testing research tools, encoding and analyzing data, creating presentation materials, and managing the research schedule. Other duties include assisting faculty with classroom instruction, exams, record keeping, and other administrative tasks, and facilitating undergraduate student learning by leading discussion sections, labs, or study groups.

Student and Employment Status

Graduate Assistants are degreed scholars (bachelors) and are primarily identified as graduate students taking at least 6 hours a term or 18hours a full 12-month period. Graduate Assistants are secondarily identified as student workers, are paid a wage at the exempt level, and receive an institutional scholarship.

Appointment Length

Graduate Assistants are expected to commit to a two-semester period but are encouraged to remain in the program for the full year (12-month period). The semester periods fall in line with the academic calendar, but overlap may occur.

Fall	August 1 through December 31
Spring	January 1 through May 31
Summer	June 1 through July 31

Graduate students must be enrolled, on track to graduate, and maintain satisfactory academic standing in order to satisfy eligibility.

Work Obligation

During the fall, spring, and summer terms, graduate assistants must work up to 50% full-time equivalent, or FTE, of 20 hours per week and follow the university calendar (no academic calendar), acknowledging university holidays.

Payment

Graduate assistants who are enrolled in the Master of Business in Administration (MBA) program will receive an annual scholarship of ($5,700) towards their MBA degree within a 12-month period. This is equal to full tuition of 18-hours ($285 x 18hrs = $5,130) and 6 sub-term program fee assessments at $95 each ($570 total). This scholarship will automatically be applied to tuition and fees. Graduate assistants who are enrolled in the Master of Education (ME) program will receive an annual scholarship of ($4,830) towards their ME degree within a 12-month period. This is equal to full tuition of 18-hours ($250 x 18hrs = $4,500) and 3 term program fee assessments at $110 each ($330 total). This scholarship will automatically be applied to tuition and fees. In addition, Graduate assistants, regardless of program, will receive a monthly stipend of $1,025. The graduate assistantship program does not include the Master of Nursing degree.

Housing And Meals

Graduate Assistants are not required to live on campus nor select a meal plan. However, should a graduate assistant elect to live on campus then published semester fees for these options are the responsibility of the student and all residential rules and guidelines apply. Graduate assistants are encouraged to speak to the Office of Financial Services to apply for federal aid.

Application and Selection

Graduate Assistantships are managed through the Office of Meaningful Work and a set number of positions are available each year. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and subject to availability. Candidates will be required to interview for the position, sign a job description if selected, and must comply with all payroll regulations.
