Schreiner University to Host Special Olympics of Texas Unified Field Day
March 27, 2024, 1200 p.m. to 200 p.m., CCAC fields at Schreiner University
Schreiner University’s Department of Exercise Science and Sport Management will be hosting a Special Olympics of Texas event on the grounds in front of the Cailloux Campus Activity Center on Mar 27 from 1200 p.m. to 2 p.m. The competition is for middle school students and up, and there are expected to be 60-70 athletes in attendance with about the same number of Schreiner student volunteers.
The event is free and open to the public.
“Schreiner University is very excited to continue this partnership with South Region of Texas Special Olympics,” said Dr. Matt Robinson, Schreiner University Associate Professor and Department Chair of Exercise Science and Sport Management. “Indeed, it provides great opportunities for Special Olympic athletes in our community, as well as Schreiner students. We look forward each spring to hosting this yearly event.”
Unified sports join people with and without disabilities on the same team to participate alongside one another in the same activity. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. The Special Olympics Unified Field Day is a laid-back event with various activities in which Special Olympics athletes and student volunteers can participate together.
Some area school districts that will be attending the event this year include Kerrville ISD, Ingram ISD, Fredericksburg ISD, Comfort ISD, and others, as well as a group from the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Center in Kerrville.
