Why Study Psychology?
Schreiner University offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Psychology. A major in Psychology can help prepare students for careers in a variety of fields including social services (e.g. mental health counselor, child care worker) and business (e.g. personnel, sales, marketing, and advertising). In addition, this program prepares students for graduate study in an equally broad number of fields including psychology (with specialties in clinical, counseling, industrial, social, cognitive), education (with specialties in counseling or administration), law, medicine, and business, as well as other professions in which a knowledge of the principles of behavior is essential.

Dr. Tiffany Culver holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. Dr. Culver has contributed to her field with several published peer-reviewed scholarly articles in the Journal of College Reading and Learning, College Teaching, and Delta Educational Journal. She currently holds the rank of Associate Professor of Psychology at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. Prior to this, Dr. Culver taught as an Associate Professor at Sul Ross State University – Rio Grande College in Uvalde, Texas. At SRSU, the student body repeatably/proudly recognized her as a “Faculty Favorite.” Dr. Culver accepted this heart-felt award from them in 2011-2012, 2017-2018 and 2019-2020.
Dr. Aisling Costello hails all the way from the West Coast of Ireland, where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2017, and received her Ph.D. in Health Psychology in 2022, both from the University of Limerick. She then moved to Waco, TX, to take up a 2-year postdoctoral research position at Baylor University. She also completed a year (2024-2025) as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Trinity University, San Antonio before she made her way to Schreiner.
Dr. Costello’s research explores how individuals vary in terms of their psychological and physiological responding when confronted with everyday life stressors. While some individuals report low levels of perceived stress and exhibit low cardiovascular responses (e.g., heart rate and blood pressure), others will exhibit increased levels of distress and heightened cardiovascular responses. Over time, persistent exaggerated cardiovascular responses to stress have been shown to predict adverse physical health outcomes. Specifically, Dr. Costello evaluates how psychological factors like personality traits, and emotion regulation strategies can pre-dispose a person to demonstrate maladaptive cardiovascular stress-response profiles, therefore, putting them at increased risk for stress-related diseases.
