Mechanical Engineers design almost everything that moves. Most machines, vehicles, devices, and components had a mechanical engineer determine what material to build with, what size and shape to make it, and how to connect all the pieces. Mechanical engineers also work with thermodynamic and fluid systems including aerodynamics, pipelines, and all types of powerplants.
Civil Engineers create and maintain the infrastructure that surrounds us. Architectural and Structural engineers design buildings and bridges. Geotechnical engineers work on foundations and other underground structures. Transportation engineers design roads, airports, and rail and subway systems. Environmental engineers consider the impact of our work on air, water, and ground pollution.

You will start with a foundation in the liberal arts, develop tools in math and science, and complete hands-on engineering coursework, research projects, senior design projects, and design competitions. Engineering Bachelor’s Degree at Schreiner University
Schreiner University offers a Bachelor of Science degree program with a major in Engineering. Our program includes two distinct tracks:
- Mechanical Engineering Track: This track is tailored to prepare students for careers in Aerospace, Biomedical, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering. View Engineering – Mechanical Track
- Civil Engineering Track: Students who choose this track will gain the skills necessary for careers in Architectural, Civil, and Environmental Engineering. View Engineering – Civil Track
Specialized Career Paths:
- Chemical Engineering: Students aspiring to pursue Chemical Engineering can opt for either the Engineering Mechanical Track or the Chemistry Integrative Track as their major. They should also consider minoring in the other discipline to establish a strong foundation.
- Petroleum Engineering: Those interested in Petroleum Engineering have several options. They can major in either of the two Engineering Tracks (Mechanical or Civil) and complement their studies with a minor in Chemistry. Alternatively, they can major in the Chemistry Integrative Track and minor in Engineering to prepare for a career in this field.
- Computer-Related Engineering Fields:* If your passion lies in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Software Engineering, consider majoring in Computer Science or the Engineering Mechanical Track. To broaden your expertise, earn a minor in the complementary field. After graduation, you may want to explore pursuing a master’s degree in your chosen field.

STEMZONE – a new facility focused on STEM academic support programming. Open to students 24/7, this facility houses common space for STEM majors and access to course-based manipulatives and software as well as a computer lab. The programming from STEMZONE include STEM Success Coaches, Professional Academic Tutors, peer tutors facilitated from the Center for Teaching and Learning, and “Just In Time” workshops to address student academic needs.
Killdeer Mountain Manufacturing Engineering Lab – Schreiner University has partnered with Killdeer Mountain Manufacturing (KMM) to provide our students with a robust and spacious laboratory. Just 5 miles from the main campus, this brand-new lab houses an array of new equipment for students on both the mechanical and civil engineering tracks. The KMM lab functions as a workspace for Engineering lectures and lab work, as well as a meeting place for student research, organizations, and events.
Dr. Bernard:
As a nuclear power engineering officer in the US Navy Submarine Force, I was responsible for water chemistry in an S6G nuclear reactor, radiological controls and dosimeter monitoring for a crew of 150 sailors, and torpedo and cruise missile tactical training. I earned my BSE in Mechanical Engineering from Tulane before entering the Navy, and my PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Duke after leaving service. I have been teaching engineering at Schreiner since Fall 2014. My research interests are energy harvesting (vibration, nonlinear dynamics), autonomous control (drones, machine learning), engineering in pop culture (Black Mirror, Harry Potter, etc) and engineering education (video production, open educational resources). Outside of class, I play a lot of video games (Starcraft II and Fallout IV are personal favorites) and every summer I travel to Las Vegas to play WSOP poker tournaments.
Dr. Unobe
I obtained my BSc in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria and my PhD in Engineering and Applied Science from Idaho State University. I have been involved in teaching and research as a postdoctoral fellow at Utah State University since 2019 and started with Schreiner University in 2023. My research interests include structural health monitoring especially using non-destructive evaluation methods, material characterization (understanding the behavior of engineering materials in varying loading conditions), structural performance under multi-hazards, progressive collapse, and engineering education. Outside of teaching and research, I enjoy reading fantasy book series, and watching a variety of sports.
Dr. Li
I earned my Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering discipline from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2023. Prior to that, I completed an MS in Control Science and Engineering at the China University of Geosciences in 2019, and a BEng in Electrical Engineering and Automation at South China Agricultural University in 2016. In 2022, I was a visiting scholar at the Center for the Built Environment (CBE) at the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining Schreiner University, I served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University from 2023 to 2024. My expertise spans indoor air quality, thermal comfort, building modeling, simulation, and control, as well as energy efficiency systems within the built environment, with a strong focus on machine learning algorithms. Outside of academia, I enjoy traveling, hiking, watching football, and belly dancing.
David Shann:
Originally from the Houston area, I studied at the University of Houston Clear Lake campus starting in 2016 and graduated with a B.S. in Physics in Spring 2020. In my final year I enjoyed researching nanomaterials, specifically the effects on the thermal and optical properties of select resins resulting from the introduction of functionalized carbon nanotubes. I spent some time working in High School Education during and after college and joined Schreiner University as an Engineering Lab Technician in April 2023. I enjoy rock climbing and I spend some of my free time playing video games and writing fictional short stories.

The Engineering program provides an interdisciplinary education grounded in scientific reasoning, problem-solving, and skills development enriched with research opportunities and experiential learning that prepares students for career success furthered by life-long learning.
