//SU Presents “Novel, TX: Writers of the Texas Hill Country”

Schreiner University and the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library proudly present “Novel, TX: Writers of the Texas Hill Country.” This much anticipated event will feature a reading from The Which Way Tree and a discussion with author Elizabeth Crook and will take place on Sept 24 at 7 p.m. in the Floyd and Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center at Schreiner University.

Each year, Schreiner University selects a book for incoming first-year students that reflects the theme or “Big Idea” for the year.  This year’s theme is resiliency, and The Which Way Tree by Elizabeth Crook is an enchanting tale of resiliency set in the Hill Country at the time of the Civil War.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Kerrville’s Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library to host this event,” said Dr. Charlie McCormick, Schreiner University president. “We invite the community to join us on campus for this extraordinary evening with Ms. Crook as we discuss her characters—Benjamin and Sam—and their quest to find and destroy a murderous panther.”

Crook is the author of five novels, including The Night Journal, which received the Spur Award from Western Writers of America, Monday, Monday, a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2014 and winner of the Jesse H. Jones Award from

The Texas Institute of Letters, and The Which Way Tree, currently under option for film with Robert Duvall to star.

Crook has written for The Southwestern Historical Quarterly and Texas Monthly and is co-author, with Stephen Harrigan, of the screenplay for The Which Way Tree. She lives in Austin with her family.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to partner with Schreiner University for this event,” said Laura Bechtel, Director of the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library. “This is a unique opportunity for the community to meet an author whose work has resonated with our patrons.”
