Family Weekend / Founder’s Day / Texas Heritage Days

Past Event – September 16th – 18th, 2022

This celebration of all things Texas continues the legacy of stories and songs as “another way of learning” started by the legendary Dr. Kathleen Hudson more than 30 years ago. The Texas Center at Schreiner University renews this tradition through showcasing Texas culture, heritage, and history. The next generation of Texas leaders will come from these hills and valleys—and this event is our gift to the region and the state as natives and newcomers alike find their place in the story and song of Texas.

Pilgrimage to Alsace

Past Event – May 29th – June 11th

Meet our tour leader, Dr. Don Frazier of The Texas Center at Schreiner University in Paris on May 30, 2023 (so fly from the US on May 29) and begin a journey of discovery in France.

We will start out in Paris, and see the places you have often heard of, and a few you may not have known about—like the location of the embassy for the Republic of Texas! From there, we head to Normandy, where Texans like Earl Rudder helped win the beachheads and Schreiner’s own Frank Denius helped achieve the breakthrough at St. Lo. Then, we will go to the Palace of Versailles and see where modern Europe was made. We continue to Champagne, where we will learn about (and sample) the famous local products and learn about the region in World War I and the fate of Kerrville boys Sydney Baker, Earl Garrett, and Francisco Lemos. We will push on to Trier, Germany, see some Roman landmarks, and visit scenes of the Battle of the Bulge. From there, we head to Alsace, the Vosges Mountains, and Riquewihr, the hometown of our very own Charles Schreiner. His family’s move to Texas set into motion a chain of events that helped shape our world today.

Throughout the journey, we will eat at carefully curated and selected restaurants, drink well, and see breathtaking scenery. There may even be a surprise or two on the way back to Paris, where we will end the journey on June 10 and fly home on June 11 from Charles de Gaulle airport. The cost of this adventure is $5,500, not including airfare. Ground transportation is by luxury bus.

Includes all breakfasts, five lunches, and eight dinners including a Michelin 3-star dining experience. You will see some important places from the history of France, the United States, Texas, and Kerrville! There will be wine. There will be champagne. There will be remarkable food (French, German, and Alsatian). There will be castles and palaces. There is even an Alsatian cooking class. All the while there will be convivial company.

Deposits ($1,000) are due on November 1, 2022.

September 4th – October 2nd

The World’s Largest Book Written by Students is coming to Schreiner University!

September 4-October 2, 2023

Location: Logan Library, Grand Hall

In 2021, the Bryan Museum of Galveston, TX and its partner organization, iWrite.org, came up with a bold idea– they would publish the world’s largest book written by… school kids. It would be more than seven feet tall and the pages would be filled with stories, art, prose, and poetry that all addressed this simple prompt: « I am Texas. » The team decided to make this into a contest that involved every school age kid in the state, and even some beyond, who had an affection and an affinity for the Lone Star State. The Bryan Museum and iWrite needed an education partner for this endeavor so, they approached The Texas Center at Schreiner University.

We got to work! Soon, dozens of Schreiner students, faculty, staff, and volunteers stepped forward, eager to read thousands of entries to determine which warranted inclusion in « I Am Texas » and which among them were the best in their region, age group, and genre. Of course, there would also be prizes awarded to the very best.

The winners each received a $20,000 scholarship to Schreiner University and the best earned a Texas Center branded laptop computer.

Organizers unveiled the final project at a gala event in Houston last fall which saw a crowd of happy students (and their beaming parents) enjoying the thrill of being published authors.

« I Am Texas » broke the Guinness World Record for “the largest published book in the world.” It is coming to campus for the entire month of September as Schreiner celebrates its centennial.
After all, we are Texas, too.
