Schreiner University Wrestling Wins the Longhorn Classic

Schreiner University men’s wrestling team competed in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Longhorn Classic at the University of Texas on Sunday, Feb. 17. The Mountaineers came in first place overall with 245 points.

Participants in the tournament included the University of North Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, University of Texas, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Houston-Downtown, and Richland Junior College.

Not only did the team take first place overall, the Schreiner Mountaineers had nine wrestlers in the finals with five becoming champions. Isaac Stalcup at 133 pounds, Brett Barefoot at 184, Tiryek West at 197, Robert Hernandez at 235 and Jacob Cuellar at heavyweight were all individual champions.

“This was another good effort by our young freshman team,” Schreiner Wrestling Coach Troy Jewell said. “[The team] is thankful for the opportunity to get better today, and they understand the importance to keep working to improve.”

The Mountaineers Wrestling men and women are scheduled to compete in the Mean Green Tournament at the University of North Texas on Saturday, Feb. 23.
