Schreiner University presents the Weir and Nell Labatt Distinguished Lecture Series titled “Voices from 9/11” on Sept 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Floyd and Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center ballrooms. This highly anticipated lecture is free and open to the public.

In keeping with Schreiner University’s theme for this year – resiliency – “Voices from 9/11” features two very special guest speakers that were at ground-zero on that horrific day – Brian Stobbie and William Groneman. Moderator for the evening will be Dr. Seabrook Jones, assistant professor of history at Schreiner University.

Stobbie worked on one of the 82nd floor of One World Trade Center (North Tower) the morning of the attack, managed to escape down stairway, and has been interviewed for several documentaries on his experience.

Groneman was a New York Fire Department captain, fire company Engine 308, on scene that morning. He is now a resident of Kerrville and author of “September 11: A Memoir.”

“While most Americans think of this day as historic because of the scale of the tragedy, I find that few have considered how 9/11 impacted our history,” said Jones. “We may not have realized it that day, but 9/11 marked the end of the post-cold-war era while simultaneously initiating a new era where terrorism replaced communism as the primary threat to the western world order.”

“I am honored to moderate an event that allows our community to examine our recent past as we continue to find our way forward as a nation,” Jones continued.

The Weir and Nell Labatt Distinguished Lecture Series was established by a generous gift from the late Nell Schreiner Labatt to bring motivational speakers to the Schreiner campus.
