The annual Texas Heritage Music Day in September is NOW an event sponsored by Schreiner University with a new name. All events are free and open to the public. Schools in Kerr and all contiguous counties are encouraged to attend.

Wednesday, September 26, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines will perform at a kickoff concert held in the Sam Junkin Hall at Schreiner University at 7 pm. Public is invited. No charge

Hendrix is a classically trained vocalist and accomplished multi-instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, and harmonica). Acoustic Guitar magazine recognized her as one of Texas’ 20 essential contemporary singer-songwriters.

Maines won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2003 as the producer for the Dixie Chicks. He toured and recorded as a member of the Joe Ely Band and has also played with Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and other Texas musicians.

Thursday, September 27, Schreiner will host a songwriting workshop from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Floyd and Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center (CCAC). Jon Hogan and Maria Moss will facilitate. This will be in the River Room of the CCAC. No Charge.

Thursday, September 27, in the Theater of the CCAC, 7 p.m., “Jimmie Rodgers Film Night.” See a trailer of an upcoming film on Jimmie Rodgers, hear stories from Rodgers’ great-grandson. No Charge.

Friday, September 28 from 9:00 am-1:30 pm, over 50 performers will gather on the Schreiner University grounds at the Robbins Lewis Pavilion to present “Another way of learning: Using Stories and Songs.” The event will showcase major genres in Texas music, presentations on Comanche and Apache heritage, chuck wagon lore, live camels and their story in Texas, Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Buffalo Soldier Heritage Team, Living History Program- The Story of Life on the Early Texas Frontier, Gospel music and a noon tribute to Jimmie Rodgers, the Father of Country Music. No Charge.

Audience: All schools, public and private, home schools, tourists in the area, retired community, VA hospital, Nursing homes and assisted living and general public are welcome.

Cost: No charge

Significance: This is the ONLY tribute to the Father of Country Music in the state of Texas. Jimmie Rodgers built his dream house at 617 West Main and lived there from 1929-1931. This event involved the students at Schreiner University and provides a unique way of learning that appeals to a specific part of the brain. The power of stories to motivate is well-documented, and Schreiner University offers many different ways of learning. Some student groups will also perform (Schreiner Varsity Program Mariachi), as well as help create educational materials for the teachers attending.
