The Core of Audacity – Dr. Benjamin C. Montoya, Assistant Professor of History

In the spring of 1804, over fifty men set out from the western edge of the United States to explore an expansive territory recently acquired by the administration of Thomas Jefferson. During the next two years, the Corps of Discovery would traverse thousands of miles, interact with various indigenous tribes, observe new species of animals and escape death at various turns. The Lewis and Clark Expedition would help formulate the young American republics view of itself as a continental power. It would also serve as an example of audacious resilience in the face of unexpected odds.
