The Schreiner community joined together May 18 to bid farewell to former president and current chancellor Dr. Tim Summerlin. Friends, family, and special guests—including emcee and music star Robert Earl Keen—gathered for dinner and fellowship in the Schreiner Event Center.
Summerlin was Schreiner’s fifth president, serving 2001 to 2016, has been chancellor since January, and will retire at the end of May. He also served as provost from 1999 to 2001.
During his term of leadership, Schreiner grew to an enrollment of more than 1,300, added numerous academic programs, increased its endowment to $62 million, built modern new facilities (like the Event Center), refurbished existing buildings into homes for the music and campus ministry programs, and greatly improved the campus’ appearance.
Summerlin is well known for his trademark bowties and references to the neck-ware filled the evening. Numerous personal anecdotes were told relating to his concern for students and co-workers, and his ability to inspire people.
