Two Schreiner University students are experiencing political history, spending two weeks in Washington, D.C., and attending the presidential inauguration.
Freshmen Jessie Leal and Natalie Raper are participating in the 2017 Presidential Inauguration Seminar. The group, which includes about 300 college students from across the nation, will tour the nation’s capital, and attend talks and seminars about, Elevating Political Discourse, which is this year's theme.
Students will take part in daily interactive programming–including guest lectures, small group discussions and budget/policy simulations. Following programming, students will use the afternoons to meet in groups with faculty leaders, partake in site visits to thought leadership organizations and visit popular D.C. attractions.
Leal, a political science major on a pre-law track, is interested in learning how the new administration plans to run and structure the executive wing of the federal government. “I want to take any opportunity I can to study what I love. This will allow me to gain first-hand experience in political discourse and in how I can shape politics in the future.”
Raper, a history major with a minor in Latin American studies and Spanish, is especially interested in all the historic landmarks and monuments in the capital. “I am a total history geek,” she said. “As D.C. is rich with history, I know that I'll be pretty busy checking it all out.”
S. Rep. Lamar Smith, whose district includes Kerrville, is providing tickets for them to attend the inauguration on Jan. 20.
Leal and Raper plan to share their inauguration experience on the Schreiner University Twitter and Snapchat account, @SchreinerU , on Jan. 20. These social media accounts have become an effective way to reach young students online. You can follow along by following Schreiner on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat.
