15th Annual Texas Heritage Music Day

Texas Heritage Music Day, co-sponsored by Schreiner University and the Texas Heritage Music Foundation, will take place 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30 on the Schreiner campus. The event, billed as “Another Way of Learning Using Stories and Songs,” will be open to the public and admission is free.

This year’s Music Day will be
9 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30
on the Schreiner campus.
The event is open to the public and admission is free.

New this year, Austin singer-songwriter Barbara Kooyman (Barbara K) will teach a songwriting class at 9 a.m. and award-winning author and musician W.C. Jameson will teach songwriting at 10:30 a.m. in the Union Church Reservations are required for the class; send an e-mail to
From 4-6 p.m. the Texas Folklore Society and THMF will co-host a panel on the songs of Texas in the historical Union Church. All the day’s events are free and open to the public.

More than 50 other performers and presenters will be spread throughout the park area surrounding the Robbins Lewis Pavilion to both entertain and educate, including Aztec dancers, chuck wagons, Native American exhibits and stories, and Texas singers and songwriters. On stage in the pavilion, starting at 9 a.m., there will be gospel music from Gospel Train and Dale Freidrich and Melissa Weatherly; an Hispanic heritage tribute, Terri Sharp, Ray Rodriguez and Sol Patch (10 a.m.); and songwriters and scholarship winners, Owen Temple, George Ensle and John Christopher Way (11 a.m.). At noon, There will be the annual tribute to former Kerrville resident and “Father of Country Music” Jimmie Rodgers. The Schreiner choir will sing for visitors at 1:30 p.m.

Food and drinks will be available for sale and a take-home educator’s packet will be available to all teachers.
