Symphony of the Hills presents music for all ages
Every year, third and fourth graders in the Kerrville area are invited to have fun with music at Symphony of the Hills’ “For the Young and Young at Heart” concert, as part of the Symphony’s mission to bring classical music to young people and—not incidentally—ensure another generation of music lovers. This year, students from the Kerrville Independent School District, Fredericksburg, Comfort, Center Point, Harper, Ingram and Notre Dame Academy, along with area home-schooled students throughout the area will be invited to one of two concerts—at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Thursday, March 3. There also will be a concert for the public at 7:30 p.m. that day.
Symphony of the Hills will invite local third- and fourth-graders to the “For the Young and Young at Heart” concert on Thursday, March 3, featuring music from Saint-Saens, Bizet, Shostakovitch and John Williams. Tickets are available at the Kathleen C. Cailloux Theater box office.
Among the music the symphony will perform will be Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals,” with John Clare of Texas Public Radio narrating an Ogden Nash poem to the music, “Festive Overture” by Shostakovitch, Bizet’s “Symphony No. 1 and “Music from Star Wars” by John Williams.”
“The Bizet is a delightful piece that isn’t played all that often,” said Jay Dunnahoo, the SOTH conductor and artistic director. “It’s hard, especially for the fiddlers. The ‘Star Wars’ music sounds like a lush overture, but I guess we’d have to call it an ‘afterture,’ since it ran with the movie’s closing credits.”
Tickets to the evening public concert are $35 and are available at the Kathleen C. Cailloux Theater box office and by calling 830-896-9393. Symphony of the Hills is partnered with Schreiner University. For more information, visit the website at www.symphonyofthehills.org.
