Schreiner recognizes outstanding teacher mentors

Two local teachers received the first-ever Best Mentor awards from the Schreiner University education department at its annual Mentor Appreciation Dinner in April.

Darla Hoop, who teaches at Nimitz Elementary School, and Tivy High School teacher Sherri Honea, were honored at the dinner and received $250 stipends. The awards were presented by Schreiner president Dr. Tim Summerlin.

Teachers in area school districts mentor Schreiner teacher education students during student teaching. Dr. Carole Errett, chair of Schreiner’s undergraduate and graduate education department, and Karen Backor, instructor of education and reading at Schreiner, chose the winners.

Errett said the award winners were chosen on the basis of how much they contributed to the success of the student teachers.

“Schreiner is extremely appreciative of the contribution of school districts and faculty to our students,” she added.
